[ The Assembly ]
After the worst hurricane in US history devastates New York, the mayor forms the NY Citizens' Assembly on Climate Change--a radical practice of direct democracy--to appease a city in riot. Dawn, a first generation American who lost her mother in the storm, is one of 150 New Yorkers chosen by lottery to help guide government policies. The Assembly and Dawn soon draw the ire of the largest power brokers in the world as they struggle to protect our only home.
THE ASSEMBLY is a multimedia play that blurs the lines between fiction and reality and invites audiences into the center of the dual crises of democracy and climate. With projections by two-time Emmy winner and Oscar nominee, Lydia Dean Pilcher (The Darjeeling Limited, Cradle Will Rock), mystical, element-driven images will clash with faux social media and regularly updated footage of current events such as Trump's presidency and Drake's house flooding. In partnership with The Assembly Project and drawing largely from actual Assemblies, we will radically experiment with audience participation both during and after the piece and invite city officials, scientists, and community stakeholders to the table for real-world impact.
